Mechanical Plumbing Apprentices Commence Training at JIST

The Mechanical Services Plumbing Apprenticeship Scheme was launched by the Premier in August 2009 with an initial intake of 30 apprentices. This was first time in many years that new apprentices had commenced and followed a concerted campaign by the Queensland Plumbers Union, the Services Trades Industry Fund and the Air Conditioning and Mechanical Contractors Association Queensland to “reinvigorate this apprenticeship.
The industry was not prepared to see this trade disappear and wanted to ensure a supply of skilled tradesmen for the future, particularly with the emphasis on green built environment outcomes, which is an important component of Services industry – now and increasingly into the future.
Apprentices have now commenced their training and will now progressively receive their off-the-job training at JIST. A lot of hard work was put into the revival of this apprenticeship and JIST would like to congratulate and acknowledge the industry parties, employers and the apprentices for their commitment towards this apprenticeship.
